Job Summary:
The Materials and Processes Engineer (Aerospace) is responsible for developing and implementing materials and processes to meet the specific requirements of aerospace engineering projects. This position requires a deep understanding of aerospace materials, manufacturing processes, and quality control procedures. The Materials and Processes Engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful integration of materials and processes into aircraft design and manufacturing processes.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Research, analyze, and evaluate aerospace materials, including metals, composites, adhesives, and coatings, to determine their suitability for specific aerospace applications.
2. Develop and implement manufacturing processes and procedures for the fabrication, assembly, and testing of aerospace components and structures.
3. Conduct material testing, including mechanical, thermal, and chemical analyses, to assess performance, durability, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.
4. Collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to provide technical expertise and guidance on material selection, process optimization, and quality control.
5. Identify and resolve materials-related issues during the design, development, and manufacturing phases of aerospace projects.
6. Maintain a comprehensive understanding of industry advancements and emerging technologies in aerospace materials and processes, and recommend their adoption where appropriate.
7. Participate in engineering design reviews to ensure materials and processes meet design specifications, performance requirements, and safety standards.
8. Develop and maintain documentation, including material specifications, process guidelines, and test reports, to ensure traceability and compliance with regulatory requirements.
9. Collaborate with suppliers to source and qualify new materials and processes, ensuring they meet the organization's quality and performance standards.
10. Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance materials and processes, reduce costs, and improve efficiency without compromising quality.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
2. Minimum of 5 years of experience working in aerospace materials and processes engineering.
3. In-depth knowledge of aerospace materials, including metals, composites, adhesives, and coatings, and their respective properties and behavior.
4. Strong understanding of aerospace manufacturing processes, such as machining, forming, joining, and surface treatment.
5. Proficiency in conducting material testing and analysis using standard laboratory equipment and testing methods.
6. Familiarity with industry standards and regulations governing aerospace materials and processes, including AS9100, NADCAP, and FAA regulations.
7. Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify, assess, and resolve materials-related issues.
8. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and present technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
9. Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to quality and accuracy in materials selection, process development, and documentation.
10. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
